Tough Supercars test for Rick Kelly at Sandown

KELLY Racing’s Rick Kelly was the 15th fastest on Friday at Sandown ahead of the Supercars Enduro Cup decider this weekend.

Penrite Racing’s David Reynolds set a lap record of 1:07.79 seconds to head the timesheet, with Kelly .057 of a second back.

Reynold’s Anton De Pasquale became the first driver into the 1:07 bracket this weekend before Reynolds trumped him.

Primary drivers were greeted with a drying track for their only 30-minute session of Friday running, meaning times tumbled throughout.

Tickford Racing’s Cameron Waters was the 12th fastest in practice, .51 seconds behind Reynolds.

Earlier, former Supercars champion Garth Tander for the Red Bull Holden Racing Team topped the opening practice as co-drivers gathered crucial track time ahead of the weekend.

Light rain fell during the morning but not enough to prevent the field from putting down some quick times, with Tander’s 1:08.0361 a standout effort.

Michael Caruso, who joins Waters as co-driver for the Enduro Cup rounds, was 13th fastest.

The day’s third practice, also for co-drivers, was delayed after a crash in the Toyota 86 Racing Series.

Just like Tander in the first practice, it was another Supercars champion from the Red Bull Holden Racing Team that set the pace. This time Craig Lowndes got within touching distance of the record with 1:07.84.

Saturday is another main driver practice before qualifying and then two races in the afternoon before Sunday’s warm-up and final race of the weekend.
