Bildstein brothers secure dinghy crown

TWIN brothers Jai and Beau Bildstein left their winning run right to the end but walked away with the Riverland Dinghy Club’s 2019 30hp Standard championship last weekend.

The 23-year-olds had to get a ­favourable result in the sixth and final race of the championship last weekend to secure their crown.

“There’s points over every race –first place is 20 points, second is 18 and so on until it gets down to one point and everybody below that gets one point,” Jai said.

“At the last race we were four points behind, so we had to make up four points to get the win.

“We finished second in the last race.

“We’re pretty stoked with how it all turned out. It was a bit of a rough road to get to where we were but it all turned out pretty well.”

Fellow locals Sean Peterson and Ben Meredith won the last race and came third overall in their first ­season.

The brothers have been racing dinghies for three years, starting in the 15hp class before moving up to 30hp Standard – the biggest class – halfway through last season.

Jai is the driver of the duo, Beau the navigator.

“I’ve let him drive the boat once or twice but he doesn’t like it, he’d rather navigate and I’d rather drive,” Jai said.

“So I suppose it works out well.”

Not being based in the Riverland, the pair are at a disadvantage in not having as much time to check out the courses.

“It’s hard, it’s trying to find the time,” Jai said. “We try and at least get there a month before and we try to get there every weekend for that month before so we know the course and know exactly where we are ­going.
