Punters keep their cool at Pooncarie Cup

THE heat didn't keep punters away from the annual Pooncarie Cup on Saturday.

Racing club president Lyle Massey said he was impressed with the crowd of about 1000 people who were not put off by the hot weather.

"(The crowd) was pretty pleasing since we ended up with a 38 degree day, which naturally would have scared a few people away," he said.

"Don't get me wrong, it would have been lovely to have a 30 degree day but it was pretty good."

The day unfolded just as Mr Massey had hoped, as people started rolling in the gates in time for the first race at 1.15pm.

Fashions on the Field were a crowd favourite, with Mr Massey saying it was bigger than last year.

"Fashions on the Field were great -- that's growing every year so that went off really well."

The crowd had come from all over for the Cup, and Mr Massey said the Labour Day public holiday in NSW and SA on Monday always encouraged visitors to stay a little longer.

"It is a long weekend in NSW and SA so a lot of them come from there and make a long weekend out of it," he said.

As expected, many of the crowd took advantage of the organised shuttle and kicked on until the early hours at the Pooncarie Hotel.

"A lot of them got back to pub after where the live band was," Mr Massey said.
