Time running out to contribute to Games plan

COMMUNITY groups and businesses have just days left to contribute ideas and show their interest in being part of the 2026 Commonwealth Games.

The Victorian Government has put out a call for ideas from communities across the state on how they could contribute to the success of the Games, including peak bodies, businesses, traditional owners and community groups.

Submissions were originally due to close at the end of July but the deadline was extended until this Friday.

Mildura Deputy Mayor Jason Modica said it was a unique opportunity for locals to become part of the state's biggest event of 2026.

"The Victorian Government is still finalising its plans for the 2026 Commonwealth Games, meaning there are still some great opportunities for us to put our community's ideas forward," Cr Modica said.

"While we know the Games will be largely based in Bendigo, Ballarat, Geelong and Gippsland, it doesn't mean there won't be other opportunities associated with such a massive event, and we need to put our best foot forward.

"Examples could include everything from local businesses able to offer services such as equipment hire through to sites or venues for training camps."

Cr Modica said it was a unique opportunity that could result in an economic boost for Sunraysia.

"If our region can capture a share of this activity, it will not only allow us to enjoy the excitement of being involved in such an iconic event, but the economic benefits that could flow to our region as a result," he said.

"If you, or your group or organisation, were close to completing your submission, or have simply just decided now to put forward your idea, you still have time."
