JUSTIN Sedgmen has continued his strong form on the speedway track, claiming his second South Australian Solo Speedway Championship on Tuesday night.
The 29-year-old followed up his fourth Victorian championship on December 18, rounding out an awesome month for Mildura Motorcycle Club rider.
He shoots into early favouritism for Sunday night's Phil Crump Trophy event at Olympic Park Speedway, the opening Sunraysia event of the season following lockdowns and restrictions.
Sedgmen finished ahead of SA duo Fraser Bowes and Brayden McGuiness in the SA championship final at Gillman Speedway, while Queenslander Zane Kelleher, who accrued the third most points across the heats, unfortunately fell on turn two and was excluded.
Fellow Mildura riders Cooper Riordan and Patrick Hamilton finished fifth and sixth overall respectively, qualifying for the semi-final, however it was McGuiness who would advance to the main final after winning that race.
Sedgmen had been finalist on nine occasions at the SA titles and was the only previous winner in the line-up.
"It has been a good ride for me in the last couple of weeks, especially after a pretty frustrating year overseas," he said.
"It's always good to win a state championship. It was a good night for me as I didn't lose a race for the entire night, which is something I wanted to do before the meeting."
Scarily for his competition, Sedgmen believes he is still yet to return to his best.
This was just his second competitive hit out, following the Victorian titles, since August when he was competing for the Glasgow Tigers in the British Speedway Championship League. He only jumped back on a speedway bike in recent weeks.
"I feel like I'm riding okay but I'm still a bit away from my best," he said.
"I missed out on a lot of racing this year and had about four months out so that competitive edge still isn't quite there yet. Hopefully after another meeting or two I'll be closer to my best.
"Obviously I've been practicing a fair bit at Mildura, I don't think I'm quite at my best yet."
Sedgmen will lead a quality field featuring a number of Mildura riders in the Phil Crump Solo Classic event on Sunday night, with Nick Morris the other current state champion in the field after winning the Queensland title.
