Hawkers’ permits

Originally published 1954

Mildura City Council has issued nearly 20 hawkers' permit during the past few days to allow sale of Royal Visit pennants and souvenirs in city streets.

Hawkers stands lined both 8th Street and Langtree Avenue yesterday, and in many cases the hawkers were selling the same wares considerably dearer than the shops a few paces away.

The did excellent trade in pennants of all sizes and in souvenir badges ranging in price from 1?6d ro 15q.

After a number of complaints by shopkeepers, City Council yesterday afternoon refused permission to a number of additions hawkers to sell their goods on the streets.

It is likely also that Mildura Chamber of Commerce will be asked by some of its members to have hawking banned entirely in Mildura Streets.
