A MILDURA man who was prohibited from possessing a firearm says the unregistered sawn-off shotgun police found in a locked safe at his home was "decorative".

Matthew John Nicholls pleaded guilty to charges including assault, possessing a controlled weapon, being a prohibited person in possession of a weapon and possessing methamphetamine.
