A YOUNG Mildura man's "cruel and cowardly" assault on an ex-partner has landed him a 20-month jail sentence.

Last Thursday, the 20-year-old was sentenced in the County Court of Melbourne, which was told the offending was spurred by his failure to accept the end of his relationship, coupled with underlying anger issues.
