A COURT has been told a family violence perpetrator needs significant counselling after witnessing killings and being held captive and tortured, while caught up in the Sri Lankan civil war as a young man.

The 40-year-old came to Australia as a refugee in 2013 and pleaded guilty to recklessly causing injury before Mildura Magistrates' Court this week.
