Long lunch shows the appeal of alternative wines

ORGANISERS have lauded the Australian Alternative Varieties Wine Show as another "fabulous" showpiece of non-mainstream wines produced from around the country.

More than 200 people turned out for wine tasting on Saturday ahead of the annual awards long lunch throughout the afternoon.

The Best Wine of Show title was awarded to a Bella Riva Sangiovese from De Bortoli Wines, while Stefano de Pieri's Stefano Docket Label took out the Best Murray Darling Region Wine for Claudia Amphora.

Show manager Helen Healy said organisers would now begin contemplating what next year's show would dish up.

"We have a really dynamic management team and we're dedicated to improving aspects of the show every year," Ms Healy said.

"We don't rest on our laurels and we have a great committee of people in the wine industry from around Australia who are really interested in having their ear to the ground to see what industry developments there have been.

"We are always looking at ways to make things better, including listening to the industry to address what they need."

Despite the want to keep the awards fresh and dynamic, Ms Healy said this year's show was "great" with most events booked out months in advance.

"We broke all records on entries and all our events sold out in nine days back in July," she said.

"A lot of people come to Mildura specifically to go to the talk and taste on Friday afternoon and stay for the exhibitor tasting on Saturday because the are more alternative varieties here than any other place in the new world at one time.
