MILDURA veterans say the announcement of a Government discount card at the weekend has the potential to make a "big difference" to the cost of living expenses, provided it's not all "smoke and mirrors."

The card, which is based on a similar discount program operating through America, was originally announced by Prime Minister Scott Morrison last year during the Invictus Games.
