Safe house needed for drunks, says Mildura mayor

PUBLIC drunkenness will be decriminalised and treated as a health issue in Victoria, bringing it into line with almost all other states and territories across Australia.

The former crime will be replaced with a health-based response, promoting "therapeutic and culturally safe pathways" to assist alcohol-affected people in public places who may be facing other challenges including homelessness, mental illness, family violence and substance dependency, a government statement stated.
