Rail expert welcomes Coalition’s passenger rail plan for Mildura but detail needed

A LEADING rail expert says more detail is needed to determine how many of the “ambitious” goals in the Coalition’s proposed $19 billion regional rail package could be met.

However, Rail Futures Institute secretary Professor Bill Russell yesterday welcomed the Coalition policy announcement, hailing it as a long-term project to ease congestion in Melbourne and improve living standards for people across regional Victoria.

The Rail Futures Institute was one of the groups consulted by the Coalition when it developed its policy, which also includes restoration of passenger rail services to Mildura, Hamilton and Horsham.

Prof Russell said level crossing upgrades and new passing loops the Coalition has promised to spend $80 million upgrading, if elected next month, were “not very complex and should be proceeded with as soon as possible”.
