Spring racing fashion set to bloom

BLOCK colours and longer dresses seem to be the trend for the spring racing season.

Fashions on the Field will be held as part of Melbourne Cup day celebrations next week at Mildura Racecourse from 12.30pm before the races get under way.

Co-ordinator Maria Robinson said it was a chance for people to get dressed up and enjoy being outdoors in beautiful weather.

"People in Sunraysia have such great style," she said.

"It's really a day where everyone can shine in their best finery."

Bright colours such as pinks and reds have been drawing attention, as well as accessories such as gloves and hats.

"It's going back into classy racewear," Ms Robinson said.

"It's not about making everything perfect, just that it all comes together.

"Things such as making sure the hair complements the hat you're wearing, or even just how you present yourself, is part of the outfit as well.

"Hold your head up when you're on stage, smile and enjoy yourself, it's so important to have fun.

"The more effort you put in, the more the judges will notice."

Tips for men entering the competition include paying attention to the whole ensemble.

"A man in a smart suit, a hanky or pocket square in the top left corner of your jacket, clean shoes, a hat, and a tie to finish it off," she said.

"Those little touches make an impression with the judges, and a suit always comes off well."

Categories for this year's Fashions on the Field include Lady of the Day, Millinery Award, Most Fashionable Lady, Male, Teen, and Youth.

There will be a variety of local prizes awarded amounting to about $5000.

Judging will begin from 12.30pm beginning with children and teens, through to women and men.

Registrations can be made from 10.30am when gates open.
