DESIGNATED drivers will receive free soft drinks while out with friends this Christmas, thanks to RoadSafe Mildura's Party Safe campaign.
RoadSafe, with support from Coca-Cola Amatil and VicRoads Community Grants, is bringing back the campaign, which aims to reduce road crashes this holiday season by rewarding designated drivers with free soft drink.
It said most of the region's popular pubs and clubs had joined the fight against drink-driving over the festive season by adopting the campaign.
Nominated drivers will receive a wristband from security or other staff on entry, which entitles them to free soft drinks when shown to bar staff.
Community RoadSafe's Tressna Martin said the campaign aimed to make roads safer and carried the simple message that drinking, drugs and driving don’t mix.
"We want people to be given the right opportunities to stay safe and look after their friends," she said.
"By having a designated driver, who will only drink soft drink for the night, you are then looking after your mates and that really is the key message.
"Alcohol affects your ability to make decisions and the more you drink, the more you think you’re okay to drive – a very valid reason for people to choose a designated driver."
RoadSafe said if you can't find a designated driver, have a Plan B, which may involve staying at a hotel or at a mate’s place or catching a taxi home.
It said statistics showed the incidence of high-risk driving behaviour peaked at this time of year, which often had devastating results.
This year, the organisation aims for zero deaths.
