Legacy ready for epic torch relay

MILDURA will be one of 45 Legacy clubs worldwide and the first Victorian region to host a leg of The Legacy Centenary Torch Relay 2023 this month.

The relay is a six-month campaign that started in Pozieres, France, travelling through London, before landing in Perth in May.

The torch has already completed its journey through Western Australia, South Australia, Northern Territory, Queensland and New South Wales, leaving Canberra on Monday, en route to Mildura.

After travelling through London, which is the only Legacy Club outside Australia, the torch will travel to all 44 Legacy clubs in Australia with legatees, a handful of selected community members and Mildura Mayor Liam Wood among the 22 torch bearers when it arrives on September 5.

The Mildura Torch Relay will begin at 10am from Nowingi Place, travelling along the riverfront to the Seventh St and Langtree Ave stairway, and then along Deakin Ave to Henderson Park for a short service at the Legacy memorial.

It will continue along Deakin Ave to Fifteenth St, head north along San Mateo Ave to Tenth St for the final leg to the Mildura RSL.

A torch relay invitation-only reception lunch will be held before Mildura Legacy holds a 90-year commemoration function that evening.

The torch will travel to central Victoria and on to Tasmania before returning to the mainland to end its journey at the Shrine of Remembrance in Melbourne on Friday, October 13.

Over the course of its journey, the torch will travel more than 50,000km, through 100 stops, carried by about 1500 torch bearers to raise more than $10 million.

Legacy provides personalised support and services to the families of veterans of the Australian Defence Force who have given their lives or health for their country.
