Losing locks for a good cause

TWO Mildura Base Public Hospital staff have taken part in the Leukaemia Foundation's World's Greatest Shave this year.

Social worker Zoe Blackie and Alcohol and Drug Nurse Leighlan Phillips teamed up for the charity fundraiser, and hit their $2500 target quickly.

"I've got family members and friends who've had various cancers and keep going through chemo so I thought it was a really good cause," Ms Blackie said.

"The more I looked into it and looked into the Leukaemia Foundation, they provide scholarships to PHD students and a lot of money to research, so I thought that was something I would really like to support," Ms Phillips said.

Ms Blackie spent six years growing her hair to a donation length, after previously cutting it short.

She had her hair cut, and Ms Phillips had her head shaved.

"The hair is going to the pony tail project which is part of world's greatest shave, they donate the hair to kids in particular experiencing cancer, going through chemo, it's a really great cause," Ms Blackie said.

The fundraising total likely jumped significantly, after Dominoes Mildura donated 200 pizzas to hospital staff on Friday.

Ms Blackie and Ms Phillips are not alone in their fundraising efforts in Sunraysia.

The Shaw family of Red Cliffs is making a very personal commitment to the fundraiser and almost a dozen members will take part, inspired by the current leukaemia battle of Jenny Shaw, 65, who has raised 11 of her own kids and two foster children.

Donations to that team can be made by searching for FourShaw on the World's Greatest Shave website, and the family will also host a fundraising event, with activities for children, at the Red Cliffs fire station from 11am on Saturday.
