Mildura parkrun sidelined by lock works

MILDURA'S parkrun has been cancelled this weekend due to rising river levels and lock works, with future events also expected be affected.

The parkrun, which occurs every Saturday morning, allows walkers, runners and joggers to come together to follow a designated track around the Mildura Weir and riverfront area.

Event director Shaun Higgs said it was "disappointing" the event had to be cancelled this weekend but the decision was out of their control.

"The people that run the lock have closed the lock area, they need to do some works coming up for the following week and with the rising river levels, it is expected that it may inundate some of that area and that will mean we cant get to the track," he said.

"So they've closed (Lock Island) and, as that is part of our track, we don't have a choice (but to cancel)."

Mr Higgs said he hoped the parkrun wouldn't be cancelled for long, but it would depend on the river levels and the lock.

"With parkrun we have a set track that is agreed to and signed off by parkrun and the council, so we cant just go off somewhere else we have to follow that track," he said.

"If the lock managers close that area we can't have access and we can't run the event, which is a shame."

The cancellation comes after a big event last Saturday, where more than 180 people attended the Emergency Services Challenge parkrun.

Mr Higgs said Mildura Weir parkrun invited local emergency service workers to run, walk or jog, trying to take out the fastest time against each other.

Firefighters, police officers, paramedics and SES volunteers participated in the event.

Fire Rescue Victoria took out the top spot, with a completion time of 22 minutes and 26 seconds.

Mr Higgs said it was a fantastic day out that had positive benefits to the community.

"(The event) promoted healthy lifestyles and inclusivity, inviting members from all services," he said.

"It gets people out and about."
