No free kicks for young drink-drivers, say police

POLICE are warning young drivers about the dangers of miscalculating their alcohol intake ahead of Sunraysia footy final celebrations.

According to Victoria Police, 20 per cent of drivers detected over the alcohol limit between April 2021 and March 2022 fell into the youth bracket, with one in five detected drink-drivers under 26.

Police said miscalculation of alcohol consumption had been identified as one of the most common reasons given to police by young drink-drivers, with the trend suggesting many were opting to risk having a few drinks before getting behind the wheel.

As end-of-season football celebrations kick off in Sunraysia and across the state, police have engaged with football clubs and leagues to ensure players and supporters can enjoy the festivities safely.

Clubs and parents in local football communities are being encouraged to arrange alternative transport options so players can celebrate with their teammates and travel home safely from end-of-season functions, reducing the risk of driving while impaired.

Road policing command acting Assistant Commissioner Justin Goldsmith said spot fines for drivers under 26 were typically $555, with a six-month loss of licence, for first-time offenders.

Experienced drivers faced fines of $462 and three months' disqualification, with more serious offences attracting penalties such as vehicle impoundment, lengthy disqualification, hefty fines or jail.

“The message is simple – drinking and driving don’t mix. We need young people to recognise this and separate the behaviour," Mr Goldsmith said.

“Far too often we hear from drivers that they thought they’d be OK to drive after one or two drinks. The safest option is – if you’re going to drink, don’t drive; or if you’re going to drive, don’t drink.

“We’re also appealing to parents to speak to their kids about planning safe ways to get home before going out, so they’re not tempted to drink and drive."
