Celebrating diverse cultures

MILDURA West Primary School concluded education week by celebrating the diverse cultures within its community.

Opening the classrooms to families throughout the week, Mildura West wrapped up its education week celebrations with Harmony Day and an assembly for all members of the school community to attend.

During the assembly, students of varying cultures spoke in their native language, sung songs to celebrate harmony and performed traditional dances.

Vice-principal Amber Lucey said Mildura West was proud to have over 30 different nationalities and cultures represented at the school.

"It's a credit to our community to have so many families from different backgrounds all come together," she said.

"The kids are very respectful of each other's cultures and genuinely interested in each other's cultures, which I think is important."

Students dressed in casual dress for the day, with many dressing in traditional cultural dress.

Ms Lucey said it was important to celebrate and provide a sense of belonging to all cultures.

"Being an international baccalaureate school, of course we have a global focus and bringing that global focus into the room is so important," she said.

"This is what life is like for kids, this is our society, it is multicultural.

"Getting people to understand the perspective of other cultures just goes a long way to bringing harmony."

Two cultures were showcased through dance at the assembly, with two parents joining in to perform with their kids.

"We are just so fortunate that our parents are also really involved in trying to inform and bring to light their own cultures for us and our school community," Ms Lucey said.

"Little Asya (Ercan) is only in prep, so for her to get up in front of all those people and dance (a traditional Turkish dance) with her dad was so special."
