MILDURA'S Country Fire Authority brigade has appointed its first volunteer captain since 1959, when it was last a solely community-based operation.

After being integrated with career firefighters for decades, the CFA is again a volunteer-based organisation after the Andrews Government overhauled the state's firefighting services this year.
