Stricter NSW border controls lead to long delays

STRICTER border crossing checks has led to significant delays at the George Chaffey Bridge border stop.

Lines were stretched from the Seventh Street roundabout in both directions including past Madden Avenue and towards Etiwanda Avenue during Monday morning peak hour.

Police were stationed at the Eighth Street roundabout preventing traffic from travelling along San Mateo Avenue.

Some residents reported it took up to 50 minutes to get from Mildura across the border into New South Wales from about 7am.

Police said the delay was caused by a new validation process for those intending to cross over the border.

Everyone crossing from Victoria to New South Wales is now required to produce proof of identity, including a residential address, in addition to their permit.

NSW police said in the "near future" defence force personnel would assist officers at the border crossing, which they anticipated would improve processing times.

Traffic restrictions have again been introduced at the Seventh Street roundabout during peak periods of weekdays from 6.30am to 10am and 3pm to 6pm.

All trucks must turn left at the roundabout and cars will not be permitted to turn right.

During peak times police will be stationed at the Seventh Street roundabout to assist in traffic movement.

Police are advising residents to refrain crossing the border if it is not necessary, to help minimise congestion, and avoid the area surrounding the bridge if you do not intend to cross.
