Wentworth Shire celebrates eco-warrior Bob Jolley

A SPECIAL celebration was held for Coomealla eco-warrior Bob Jolley on Wednesday at the Midway Community Centre in Buronga.

The eighty-one-year-old Mr Jolley recently received the 2020 New South Wales Environmental Citizen of the Year Award for his work in the community.

Mr Jolley is well known for raising funds for projects in Wentworth Shire such as the local skate park.

He raised more than $25,000 for the skate park by collecting bottles and cans for recycling.

The celebration in Buronga included members of his family and the Wentworth Shire councillors, Mayor Melisa Hederics and general manager Ken Ross.

Mr Jolley said it was a lovely celebration.

"It went off just like Wentworth does, just nice and quietly and with no real hassle," he said.

Mr Jolley accepted the celebration humbly.

"I kept saying this isn't about me. This is about recycling, this is about getting things out of landfill," he said.

Ms Hederics said Mr Jolley was an inspiration to many people and had worked tirelessly raising money that directly benefited the Wentworth Shire community.

"He has been collecting bottles and cans for recycling over many years with all profits being generously donated to local projects," she said.

"This equates to around 294,000 bottles and cans that have not ended up in landfill. This is an amazing feat for one person to achieve and we thank Bob for his dedication to his community."

Mr Jolley has helped raise money for the Wentworth Kindergarten Long Day Care Centre and a youth centre in Dareton.

"I just want to be part of it ... and see things happen, particularly for youth," he said.

Mr Jolley is now hoping to become involved in helping the Wentworth community advocate for a new doctor.
