Make-A-Wish Mildura keeps fundraising going

THE Mildura branch of Make-A-Wish Australia is making the best it can of life under COVID-19 restrictions.

"All of our fundraising has really been put on hold," fundraising co-ordinator Samantha Freckleton said.

"All our wishes have also been put on hold, obviously because we can't interact with the kids and their families at the moment."

However, the branch is still seeking donations from the community.

"One of our volunteers runs a massive garage sale so he's always looking for anything that people are getting rid of," Ms Freckleton said.

"They can touch base with us and we can arrange for him to pick stuff up."

Although the branch may not have any fundraising events to look forward to at the moment, it is planning for the 2021 gala ball after this year's cancellation.

"We had all of our sponsors locked in so it was a tough decision and it's a huge fundraiser for Make-A-Wish," Ms Freckleton said.

The branch plans to hold the next ball on May 22 next year and Ms Freckleton said members were very thankful to sponsors who had offered to support the event.

In the meantime the branch is making sure it stays in touch with its children and families.

"It has been hard but we've been sending our three wish kids gifts just to keep them in the excitement mode and just to let them know we haven't forgotten about them as well," Ms Freckleton said.

"To keep that excitement going for their wish and the anticipation of what they've got to look forward to is really, really important."

Ms Freckleton encourages anyone who knows of a child struggling with a life-threatening illness to get in touch with the branch.
