Little clarity on council rates relief

RATE relief does not appear to be an option for Wentworth Shire Council residents who have found themselves without an income thanks to the COVID-19 pandemic.

Sunraysia Daily asked both Wentworth Shire Council and Mildura Rural City Council on Friday whether either was looking at reducing or waiving rates.

Wentworth Shire general manager Ken Ross said at this stage there was no legislative opportunity to alter rates arrangements.

"Council, whilst compassionate to current community pressures, must respond in accordance with the legislative requirements," he said.

"Should the (New South Wales) Government mandate changes, then council may consider individual requests."

Wentworth Shire was also asked if there had been an increase in the number of ratepayers contacting the council concerned they would not be able to pay.

The council did not respond.

Mildura Rural City Council was asked whether waiving or reducing rates would be possible and if there had been an increase in the number of people concerned they would not be able to pay.

The council did not respond by deadline.
