Planning application brings Robinvale Subway one step closer

A PLANNING application has been lodged to bring Robinvale's first Subway shop to the town after more than 12 months of controversy.

Swan Hill Rural City councillors last October approved a decision to sell residential land on Bromley Road despite a community petition signed by nearly 500 opposing residents.

Councillors suggested the Subway development would be a way to bring 24-hour services to the areas and boost employment.

Mildura planning consultant Roy Costa -- who represents Subway's franchise owner -- agreed with this sentiment and said lodging the application to the council would bring the development one step closer to construction.

"We believe we meet all the provisions of the planning scheme and it's been designed to support and link with the surrounding parklands," Mr Costa said.

"A gazebo will also be provided in the parklands, in addition to car and caravan parking."

Preserving the historic significant of the land was at the centre of the community backlash, while some submissions argued a commercial development should not be established on the Western side of Bromley Road as it would impact on other businesses.

Mr Costa said an automatic car wash facility would also be part of the new development, and construction would start within 12 months.

The council will have 28 days to consider the application and request further information if required before handing over a permit.
