WAR veteran and Mildura RSL vice-president Tyson Matheson has cautiously welcomed the Federal Government's creation of an independent body to investigate suicides among defence force personnel and veterans.

Mr Matheson, who served in Afghanistan for seven months until he was medically discharged in July 2013, this week said the move was "a good start", but the proof would be in the pudding.
