Sports careers must be taken seriously

MORE people are employed as sportspeople in Australia than mining engineers, surgeons, optomet­rists or barristers – so why aren’t students’ aspirations for a sporting career treated more seriously? 

Sports participation and elite sporting success are central to ­Australian culture and a prominent source of national pride, yet pursuing a career as a sportsperson is ­frequently classified as a “fan­tasy” or glamorous occupation that stud­ents are unlikely to achieve.
