Wentworth Uniting Church exercise group moving again

THE Wentworth Uniting Church mobility and exercise group is back on its feet after the longest break in its 30-year history.

The group met on Wednesday for the first time since it was forced into recess in March due to COVID-19 measures.

Organiser Lola McKinnon said while the group was all about improving and maintaining mobility, the social interaction had also been sorely missed during isolation.

"It was absolutely wonderful getting to see people I haven't seen for ages and getting back into a bit of mobility and exercise," she said.

The group was founded early in the 1990s and until now has taken only short breaks over Christmas.

It is open to anyone, of any age, as a safe environment to use stretches and exercises to help keep up mobility.

"You're not there to break any records, you're just there to be in a group and improve your mobility," Ms McKinnon said.

"There's no jumping up and down trying to lose weight, it's all about mobility and stability. You can do everything at your own pace."

According to Ms McKinnon, a regular focus on maintaining agility and flexibility is more important than many might think.

"One of our main stresses is mobility, not so much for older people, but for people who have found that they need their mobility helped," she said.

"As you get a bit older, you don't realise that some of the muscles don't want to do the simple things like brushing your hair and things like that. As you get older, those things become more difficult."

The mobility and exercise group meets on Wednesdays and Fridays at 10am at Wentworth Uniting Church.
