THE new boss of the rebadged Mildura Base Public Hospital has promised a "really contemporary" and "high-performing" health service that has a greater focus on community engagement.

On a landmark and "smooth" day one of the transition back to public management, the hospital's new chief executive, Terry Welch, also hit back at critics of the switch away from private provider Ramsay Health Care.
