St Paul’s Primary School Christmas show celebrates diversity

ST Paul's Primary School put a twist on its annual Christmas concert, which was held on Tuesday night.

After filing through enrolment forms of more than 300 students and compiling a list of cultural heritages, performing arts teacher Jess Freeman began putting together a show that would represent and celebrate the wider school community.

"It's usually always Christmas-themed because we are a catholic school and Christmas is pretty important," Ms Freeman said.

"However, this year I have put a bit of a twist on that by including all of the different nationalities and cultures we have here at our school and make it relevant to the whole school community."

The whole of the fourth term was dedicated to the end of year performance, which invited family and friends to join each other in an evening picnic before they enjoyed the show.

Ms Freeman was excited to showcase the multi-cultural themed performance, which included a different culture represented in every song and dance.

"I think it's important for all of our families to feel included in how we run our school and feel like they are part of our community," she said.

"Every song and dance is from a different culture and then in between there were narrations from kids who have different backgrounds who told little stories and so we weaved it all throughout."

A number of school parents helped with choreography and costumes for the performances during the term.

"It's intense but I love it, and they love it, too, which is why it's all worth it," she said.
