Mildura Indian restaurant provides free meals for the homeless

AN Indian restaurant in Mildura is paying it forward with the success of the eatery prompting its owner to give away free meals for those in need.

For the past four years owner of Daawat-E-Mildura Kulvir Singh has been providing free takeaway meals to the homeless five days a week.

Despite businesses doing it tough as a result of many state-wide lockdowns, Daawat-E-Mildura has decided to now provide the meals seven days a week to ensure no one goes hungry.

"The Mildura community gives a lot to us and because of that our business is running very well," Mr Singh said.

"So in the hard times it is my turn to pay something back to them."

He said while there had not been a huge uptake previously, since advertising the extended service on social media, he had about 20 more people in need come in for a hot meal.

Mr Singh said the restaurant had a number of regulars for the free meals for the homeless, who greatly appreciated the helping hand.

However he said he wanted to extend the service to help even more locals who were struggling.

"We have a man that comes in each Thursday and he says to us "god bless you" which to us is a million-dollar word and makes myself and my staff very happy," he said.

"We want to help as many people as we can so if there are any homeless societies or people in need, whether there are 50, 100 or 500 people, we want them to get in touch so we can help."

He said the free meals for the homeless continually changed but were all vegetarian and included portions of rice, lentils and kidneys beans.

Those in need can collect a takeaway meal each night between 5pm and 10pm from 121 Eighth Street, Mildura.
