Stay informed warning issued for Colignan bushfire

COLIGNAN, Hattah, and Kulkyne are being advised to stay informed as a bushfire originating at Brown Road is traveling in a south-easterly direction towards Raak Track in the Hattah Kulkyne National Park.

People in these areas are being advised that while there is no current threat, it is important to stay informed and plan for what to do if the situation changes, including by monitoring weather conditions and warnings and reviewing fire survival plans.

As a result of the bushfire smoke will be visible from nearby communities and roads, however it is advised for Triple Zero to be called only if flames or a defined column of smoke is visible.

At least 16 crews have responded to the bushfire, and it remains not yet under control.

“It’s really important for everybody to keep up to date with warnings and information relating to the conditions that we have today, and particularly if people are close to the fires that we know we have at the moment,” VicEmergency state control centre spokesperson David Nugent said.

“The VicEmergency website and app are key information sources, they contain all the details of the warnings, they contain information about what we’re asking people to do, but importantly, we also ask people not to rely on that one source of information.

“The emergency broadcasters that we have across the state are really important source of information that will help people to also understand the conditions and those warnings.

“The weather is hot, it’s windy, we have storms forecast and there is a wind change so it’s critical even if people aren’t in areas where they might know there are fires, to still keep up to date with all the conditions and know what’s going on all the time.

“The wind change coming through is going to be really challenging for our firefighters, as we continue through the rest of today it’s important people understand that and keep across the details of all of those warnings.”

Saturday 10 January is a day of total fire ban in all regions of Victoria, including the Mallee with the fire danger rating in the Mallee listed as high.

An alert for a bushfire at Tapalin Mail Road in Euston, although located in the stay informed zone, is unrelated with New South Wales Rural Fire Service listing the incident as a truck fire under control.
