Golden times at Australian Country Junior Basketball Cup

MILDURA Basketball Association athletes were among the medals at the Australian Country Junior Basketball Cup in Albury that wrapped up on Saturday.

Brianna Behsmann (under-18 girls Victoria Goldminers), Ava Zadow and Alexandra Leng (under-16 girls Victoria Bushrangers) and Shaun Watson (under-14 boys Victoria Goldminers) all tasted the ultimate success with their sides.

Victoria Goldminers won 83-63 over Victoria Bushrangers in the under-18 girls gold medal game. 

Behsmann scored seven points in the final, averaging 5.75 across the tournament –  including 12 points against South Australia Sharks in the early rounds.

Leng and Zadow played well across the week for the Victoria Bushrangers in under-16 girls, having a hand in their 80-71 win over Victoria Goldminers in the gold medal game. 

Zadow scored 17 points in the final and Leng 10. 

The final was Zadow's highest scoring game for the tournament, she averaged 10.5 in the event. 

Leng averaged 13.38 points, including an 18-point effort against South Australia Magpies.

Watson, for the Victoria Goldminers under-14 boys, scored a tournament personal best 21 points in a 81-65 gold medal game victory over Victoria Bushrangers. 

Watson averaged 14.88. His best effort outside of the final was 20 points against Tasmania Tigers.

Meanwhile, Ellie Pitt played for the Victoria Bushrangers’ under-14 girls, averaging 2.75 points per game.

Former Sunraysia basketballer and now Bendigo-based Macey Eaton was part of the silver medal winning Victoria Bushrangers under-18 boys side.

Will McGinty and Dru Pilmore (under-18 boys) and Trequan Rudd-Morfaw (under-16 boys) were emergencies.
