Be taken on musical journey at Mildura Arts Centre

LOVERS of classical music will be taken on a special journey at Mildura Arts Centre on Thursday night.

Journeys is in Mildura as part of the Murray River Music Festival, which links Italian and Australian musical influences.

Featuring soprano Shauntai Batzke, pianist Stefan Cassomenos, violinist Monica Curro and cellist Michelle Wood, the performance explores the various journeys that make up our lives.

Ms Batzke composed some of the music in the program especially for the concert and said she looked forward to sharing her own story with the audience through her music.

"I have a piece called Travellers and that represents my heritage through the different languages," Ms Batzke said.

"Some of it is written in Wiradjuri, also in Chinese, German, Welsh, Maori and English, because that's what my background is."

Event organiser Alison MacGregor said the concert combined some unusual elements to bring a modern touch to the classical genre.

"What excites me about tonight's performance is that it's chamber music and its collaborations of an unusual style – to have a piano trio with a singer is unusual," she said.

"It's a very contemporary repertoire. Sometimes people think with classical music that you're playing music by dead composers, but this is a really recent repertoire."

Tickets are available through artsmildura.com.au or at the door from 7.30pm on Thursday night.
