Access all areas: New SRS home impresses expert

MILDURA'S first specialist disability accommodation, high physical support facility will be "an excellent place to live", according to an NDIS assessor.

The SRS home, on Deakin Avenue near Mildura Central, will soon house up to five people over its two levels.

On Friday, the building was audited by assessor, Amy Zuluaga, ahead of its opening in early November.

It required specific dimensions to allow for wheelchair users, utilities placed in accessible locations, low switch heights, the specific placing of door handles, an elevator and adequate slip ratings.

Ms Zuluaga, who is also an occupational therapist, said she had assessed over 100 homes and apartments across Victoria, and was highly impressed with the SRS house, built by Garraway Homes.

"The floors downstairs I think are gorgeous, but they still make the slip rating and they still meet the compliance requirements," she said.

"In the living room, the minimum amenity you've got to have is basically a two-and-a-half-metre radius circulation space, but the proportions in here are really generous.

"I think it'll be an excellent place for people to live, it's not just the minimum standard. I think they've done a really good job."

Garraway Homes director Ben Garraway said his team were finishing up on the project this week, 10 months after the concrete was first poured.

"It has been challenging with weather when we started, it has been challenging with the two storeys and buildings close by, but it has gone really well," he said.

"It is getting very close (to completion), a couple more days and there will be furniture and when that goes in it will be great."

Mr Garraway said the team had worked hard to ensure the build was done right.

"This is the first building of its type in Sunraysia," he said.

"We have been working closely with Amy and (SRS chief executive officer Marian Luehman) to ensure 1. SDA compliance and 2. it’s a beautiful home."

SRS said the build was the first known SDA high physical support project to be completed in the Mildura area.

Other liveable housing facilities completed by SRS were built prior to the new SDA standard.
