Mildura collision disrupts peak traffic

POLICE spent two hours directing traffic at Mildura intersection on Monday morning following a two-car collision that took out a set of traffic lights.

Leading Senior Constable Steve Driscoll said police, Fire Rescue Victoria and SES were called to the Deakin Avenue and Eleventh Street intersection, where a car is believed to have run a red light, about 8am.

"One motorist was travelling south along Deakin Avenue and has failed to give way to someone that was travelling west along Eleventh Street," Sen-Constable Driscoll said.

"The vehicle travelling down Eleventh Street has been hit and then ran into one of the traffic lights, which has caused a large issue with traffic direction."

The impact of the collision uprooted the traffic light in the centre median and caused damage to a street sign.

The male and female drivers were the sole occupants of their vehicles and escaped serious injury.

"The driver of the westbound vehicle was taken to Mildura Base Hospital for observation and the (driver) from the other vehicle was uninjured."

Both cars were towed from the scene and parts of Eleventh Street and Deakin Avenue were closed to motorists.

Police then spent two hours directing traffic.

Sen-Constable Driscoll said a charge of failing to obey a traffic signal could be laid on one driver.
