Taking to social media, Cr Clemence said the community response to the pandemic had been "nothing short of a magnificent", but warned against residents becoming complacent.

He said that as someone regarded as being in a high risk category, he was thankful that others in the community had "taken a hit for the team".

"I wanted to take the opportunity this time to thank you for the way that you have handled yourself in what is clearly very difficult and trying times," Cr Clemence said in the Facebook post.

"This has been very challenging, but you have persevered and because you have persevered we are actually winning this fight against COVID-19," he said.

"You have done nothing short of a magnificent and you are to be thanked, not just from me as mayor or from me as representative of the community, but even personally."

However, he urged residents to continue abiding by social distancing measures to continue the good work done so far.

"We're not there yet and I know people are starting to crawl up the walls and feeling very uncomfortable with being locked down at home," he said.

"I know it's starting to sound and look like we're coming out the other end with our government leaders actually talking about reducing some of the controls, but the reality is we've still got a long way to go."

The mayor also praised government leaders and those working on the frontline during the pandemic.

"I think they have done an absolutely magnificent job at all levels of government, no matter what their persuasion," he said.

"I think they have just been fantastic examples of leaders and they are leading this community in exactly the way that we would hope they would.

"I would ask you to please keep listening to our leaders."

Cr Clemence said he, too, was looking forward to the current restrictions being relaxed, but in good time.

"I hope that happens at some time in the near future, but at the moment we have to remain vigilant -- we have to stay at home and we have to keep safe," he said.
