A WOMAN has learnt an expensive lesson, after lighting a fire on a total fire ban day last summer.
On December 28 last year, Jennifer Hill dug a hole and put a match to a pile of rubbish in the backyard of her Merbein block after cleaning out her home.
The Country Fire Authority was called to extinguish the small fire.
Hill pleaded guilty before Mildura Magistrates’ Court this week.
In a police interview, Hill said she had been unaware of the ban.
Magistrate Gerard Lethbridge said there was a lesson to be learnt and told Hill to refrain from lighting fires over summer and if unsure, to check with the fire brigade.
“There’s a substantial risk of causing an out-of-control fire than can kill or cause an enormous impact on the community,” he said.
Hill was convicted and fined $500.
