NAIDOC celebrations were in full swing yesterday as a large crowd marched through Langtree Mall to mark the occasion.
A welcome to country ceremony performed by Aunty Janine Wilson and a smoking ceremony by Uncle Willie Hannah officially opened the celebration at Mallee District Aboriginal Service (MDAS) before people headed to Mildura Rural City Council’s offices for a flag-raising ceremony. The event finished in the mall with a community event and barbecue.
MDAS regional co-ordinator for tackling indigenous smoking, Nathan Yates, said he was pleased with the turnout, which he estimated was about 200.
