NATIONALS candidate Anne Webster could soon be declared as the Member for Mallee.
ABC election analyst Antony Green has tweeted that Dr Webster will be elected, after the latest distribution of preferences ruled out a possible challenge by the Liberal Party's Serge Petrovich.
Mallee remains the only Victorian seat not to be declared by the Australian Electoral Commission (AEC), but that now may not be far away.
Had Mr Petrovich made it into the final two candidates, it's not clear who would have emerged the winner.
But figures published by Mr Green showed that Labor's Carole Hart had pushed ahead of Mr Petrovich by 386 votes after preferences for independent Jason Modica were distributed.
That would see Mr Petrovich knocked out and his preferences distributed, most of which were likely to favour the Liberals' Coalition partners.
Dr Webster would become the fifth Member for Mallee and its first female MP.
