Driver thought he’d ‘get away’

A YOUNG man told police he tried to outrun them in an unregistered car because he “thought he was going to get away”.

The driver, who was 17 at the time, pleaded guilty to three charges before a children’s court on Thursday.

Last November Mildura police observed him driving along Surgey Street at Merbein and found the vehicle’s registration had expired.

On spotting police behind him, the man sped off, reaching speeds of 100km/h in a 60km/h zone before driving through a stop sign at 80km/h without attempting to pull up.

When the driver was stopped, police found he had never held a licence.

The teen told police he panicked and “kept going because I thought I was going to get away”.

The car was impounded.

The driver was placed on a nine-month good behaviour bond and ordered to complete a safe driving program.
