‘Stupid mistake’ costs man licence

A RED CLIFFS man slammed into a power pole after getting behind the wheel while alcohol and drug affected.

In January, Joshua Needham was travelling along Cocklin Avenue while on his way from Mildura to Red Cliffs about 1.40am.

The Mildura Magistrates’ Court yesterday heard he appeared to lose control of the vehicle, swerving from one side of the road to the other before crashing into a power pole, which spun the car around on impact.

Needham was taken to Mildura Base Hospital by ambulance and tested positive for cannabis and recorded a blood alcohol level of 0.191, more than 3½ times the legal limit.

In a police interview, he claimed to have consumed three to four drinks and said it was a “stupid mistake”.

He was fined $1200 and had his licence cancelled for 25 months.
