RETIRED doctor Barry Dowty’s submission to the State Government shows why the privatisation model of Mildura Base Hospital (MBH) is detrimental, Member for Mildura Ali Cupper says.
Dr Dowty, who was a consultant physician with MBH for 33 years, has been a vocal critic of the private management model and his submission to the Future Health Care Needs of Mildura survey outlined several factors he said showed it was not working.
These include the lack of salary packaging for staff, the lack of community and staff involvement in decision-making due to a lack of a board of directors and difficulties with the hospital’s model of employing specialists rather than using local specialists as visiting medical officers (VMOs).
