Fine for ‘horrible message’

A MILDURA man sent a “horrible message” to his young son when he called the boy’s mother a “dumb bitch”, a court has been told.

In fining the man $800 for breaching a limited intervention order, Magistrate Andrew Capell said children exposed to domestic violence were affected by it.

“They listen, they see ... they become offenders because of what they’ve seen,” Mr Capell told the man.

The Mildura Magistrates’ Court was yesterday told the couple argued over the behaviour of their five-year-old son when the accused referred to the victim as a “dumb bitch” in breach of an intervention order.

Defence counsel Alexis Buckley said there had been tension between the pair over the victim’s drug use and mental health issues, as well as the woman’s suspected involvement in the theft of $2000 cash.

Ms Buckley said the victim’s use of illicit drugs inflamed her mental health issues and created many arguments between the pair.

Mr Capell said that while he accepted the accused “just lost it” and regretted his actions, it sent a horrible message to the young child.
