Scientists: Murray Darling environmental flow targets were not met

THE Wentworth Group of Scientists this week released a damning report showing environmental flow targets on both the Darling and Murray Rivers set in the Murray Darling Basin Plan have not been met.

Australian National University Professor Jamie Pittock, a member of the Wentworth Group, yesterday said it was particularly critical of the Victorian Government for not allowing higher flows to pass through the Goulburn River into the Murray River to ensure flood plain areas in downstream areas like Sunraysia had enough water to maintain healthy ecosystems.

“The problem is when Murray gets as far downstream as Sunraysia and the Riverland, you need a fair bit of water in the river to fill up the river channel and for the river to spill over the banks and into the flood plain,” Prof Pittock said.
