CHAIR of the Mallee Group of the Order of Australia Association Vernon Knight has labelled this year’s Australia Day honours list “grossly disappointing” after only one resident from the Mallee region was recognised by the Order of Australia.

A record 1,127 Australians were recognised for their outstanding and inspirational qualities at this year’s ceremony, with the Mallee branch’s only recipient being Merbein resident Elizabeth Jean Maffei, who received the Medal of the Order of Australia for her service to the community of Mildura.

Mr Knight said Australia Day Honours Lists usually averaged around three awardees from Mildura alone and blames a misunderstanding of the nomination system for the reduced number of awards for the region.
