POONCARIE remains in the grips of drought six months after the statewide drought declaration, with conditions re-intensifying in western NSW, according to the latest figures for January.

The town is part of the 44 per cent of the state in “drought”, while other areas of Wentworth Shire fall under the 18 per cent that is “drought affected”, according to the NSW Department of Primary Industries state seasonal update.

Released yesterday, the update said numerous climatic records were smashed during January where some areas observed the lowest January rainfall totals in a 100-year history.
