AUSTRALIAN tennis’ newest sensation Kimberly Birrell has always had the potential – ask anyone who followed the 2015 Mildura Grand Tennis International closely.
The 20-year-old Queensland wildcard faces world No.2, reigning Wimbledon champion and 2016 Australian Open winner Angelique Kerber today in the third round at the Australian Open.
Her outstanding run at the grand slam tournament so far included a win over 29th seed Donna Vekic on Wednesday, which catapulted Birrell from unheralded youngster to unlikely hero.
