Call for the midwives: Private hospital forced to cut postnatal service

A MIDWIFE shortage has forced Mildura Health Private Hospital to restrict the opening hours of its postnatal unit for two months.

Director of clinical services Karen Woolfe said three midwives had left the hospital recently, forcing a reduction in the postnatal unit service.

Ms Woolfe acknowledged the situation could result in mothers with private health insurance needing to either stay at Mildura Base Hospital or return to it over weekends, with the private hospital’s postnatal unit opening only from Monday morning until Friday afternoon until March 3.
